Arena football team drive - anything official

Hey Big Mike you seem to know a lot about this. If and when we get this going, we could use the help.

Before we even start thinking about ownership it has to be determined if a team could even play here logistically. Lots has changed in the AFL since the Marauders and it should probably be determined if the DCU has the facilities to meet the requirements of a team, which is what I'm looking at right now.

I should note that unlike the saveourhockey stuff this is not on my "front page" of things-to-do....I've spent less than an hour looking at stuff and don't anticipate really getting behind this until the Sharks are established here.

If Bob Kraft were involved in the ownership of the team then I would say that there would be a very good chance of the AFL returning to Worcester. Unfortunately, there appears to be no interest from Mr. Kraft.

I believe the standard going rate for an AFL team right now is $20 million upfront and $60 million in net worth/assets.

(I think that was the requirements for the Utah Blaze; Kansas City was let in for slightly less, but they wouldn't have been in the league at all this year if it the league hadn't had to fill an emergency slot with New Orleans going dormant.)

Yes that is a tad bit overpriced (I think they had a deal set down for the aforementioned Firebirds to be sold for something like $4 million, but that would have had the effect of lowering the average franchise value, and so they vetoed the sale and the franchise was folded), but that's what they want right now.

I thought that the Marauders did fairly well when you consider that the team relocated to Worcester shortly before the start of the season (the original 1994 schedule actually had Detroit on it) and the Arena Football League was not nearly as popular in 1994 as it is now. Unfortunately, though, the only way I see the AFL returning to Worcester is with a VERY wealthy owner.

As I said before, I'm just working on the business end of it right now...and what I know from a person that has tried to get a team before hasn't excluded a chance at the AFL yet.

Something to keep in mind: when the Indiana Firebirds were in search of new ownership a couple of years ago (which never happened, unfortunately), the Arena Football League announced that any potential ownership group must have a net worth of at least $60 million. When people associated with the AFL say that an expansion franchise will be considered "under the right circumstances", what they really mean is that they are looking for billionaire owners such as Charles Wang and Jerry Jones. Again, I'm not trying to be negative, but AF2 may be a more realistic goal.

I had a conversation today with someone who was previously interested in putting an AFL team here and he said that the AFL wouldn't be against putting a team here if the circumstances were right.

LOL - God I don't believe we are talking about this already since there's still work to do with the Sharks (need more pledges!), but that's OK. Big MIke is probably right. If you look at the avg attendance in AFL, it's around the capacity of the DCU. It would be nice to expand up here in N.E. along the lines of the AHL. Maybe Portland, Providence, Worcester in AFL2. Also a little digression - the Krafts (Patriots) used to own the rights to put an AFL team in the then Centrum, but let that expire out. I had season tickets to the AFL2 Wolves (in Mohegan Sun, not Manch), and they averaged a little over 3,000 there.

I don't mean to be negative 210, but the Arena Football League is not interested in smaller cities like Worcester anymore. If there is ever an AFL team in New England again it will be in Boston.

Right now the plan is to aim high for AFL....

I wouldn't expect there will be a site for it for quite some time...I'm still working on the business end of it to see if it's even feasible to try.
