(OT) Free Anti-virus softwear

From: 210   210 is a registered live IceCat
Date: 22-Aug-03

Judging from the number of times I've been sent this latest worm (now over 200, and getting one about every 6 minutes this morning) many are obviously not protected by anti-virus softwear. Here is a link to a very good free program:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

NOTE: DO NOT download this if you have any other anti-virus softwear on your computer.

I use this software as well, it's very good.  I've never had a virus get in, even through all this crap in the past week.  I also use the ZoneAlarm firewall, and that seems to help keep the junk out.  The IT people at my work had suggested it, glad they did.

From: 210   210 is a registered live IceCat

Zone Alarm is the best free software (see, I can spell that word) firewall available...in fact I think it's better than many of the "pay" ones.

And BTW Jojo and Speed...someone we know has the worm because I've gotten it with both your e-mails as the sender, as have a couple posters on BNF (and Speed doesn't even post there).

Yeah, I got one or two from your email address too, I think what it did was attack the senders list from whoevers email and sent from there.  I went through some of my old sent mail and noticed a lot of the addresses in there were on these virus emails.  I had sent you something a while back, I noticed on the BNF post about this it had the booster club's president's email, as well as my hotmail email.  Seems to have eased up today, hopefully that's that!  In the past with other viruses I have had sent to me that they seem to stem from the boards, sometimes I'll get something supposely from Springfield's booster club, usually it's labeled as a Falcon pic, other times I get them with something associated with hockey, ahl, the Cats, or the Blues.  I've never (knock on wood) had anything get into my system at home, you can usually tell by misspelled words in the subject line, and the size of the email.  AVG has caught everything there, work on the other hand...I had to use the removal tool yesterday afternoon for SoBig, they use Norton, it got in.  You still getting the bad emails?

If you have virus scanning software installed properly you wont get any, it will filter it before it hits your in box. When you use that free crap you get what you pay for. Norton is crap also , get the best, get McAfee, I use it on over 200 computers and it has never let me down. As far as firewalls, Zonealarm is definatly the best, the pro version is even better than the free one, very configurable. The computer worm/virus thing is in it infancy, you havent seen anything yet. make sure your virus definitions are updated and your firewall is running and kepp yourself educated to what is going on in the world. Last but not least if you are running anything wireless be sure to secure it, if you bought it, unboxed it and it worked great and you didnt secure it, you might as well put you machine out on the front porch !!!!

Also if you have XP, turn on the Firewall that comes with it! But you can't go wrong with Zonealarm - come on it's free! Check this out - since April it has blocked 39,000 intrusions from my PC - 31,000 of them high-rated!  And spend the money on anitvirus software - think of it as an ongoing tune-up for your PC.

People that use Norton often dislike McAfee, and vice versa. Both are good and each has it's own particular "issues". Grisoft's free program is only a small step behind these 2.

I have used both mcafee and norton. Mcafee is a far superior product, on more than one occasion mcafee has caught something that norton has missed. The bottom line is make sure you use something and dont open an email if you dont know where it came from or if it looks suspicious. Virus spreading depends greatly on peoples stupidity, dont contribute !!!

From: jojobeans72   jojobeans72 is a registered live IceCat

I didn't have very good luck with Mcafee.  I did get a couple of viruses when I had it.  Norton just seemed to make a mess of my computer.  There is also a pay version of AVG, not sure how much more that version offers.  Another program I run is Ad-Aware (also free) http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml.  Keeps advertisers, trackers and spyware out of your system programs and your cookies.

Thanks for all the info, peoples.

I was one of the peeps hit with one of the latest viruses, and I have McAfee Professional and the ZoneAlarm firewall.  The virus still managed to get through the protections as an attachment to a .jpg file on an advertising (SPAM!) email.

The only thing I hated about McAfee is that I had to delete and re-install it to get it tow work, 'cause the virus attacked it as well.  It also managed to infect my boss's system, and he uses Norton.  So, unless you Live Update, as often as possible, these things get through.

Live and learn!

Judi

The real problem wit most virus software is people buy it, install it and forget it. You need to keep it updated. The auto updates that come with most packages are set to once a week or less. You should update every time you are online, it runs in the background and you can still do whatever else you need. I have worked on more machine that have virus scan running but the definitions are a year or more old. keep it up to date, new viri come out daily and you need to be protected. Soon ISPAS are going to shut off people who are causing a lot of traffic due to a virus. You have to take responsibility for what your computer is doing !!!!!!!!1

If you are using either Charter or Comcast as your ISP and have my e-mail  (mamane_21@hotmail.com), Jojo's, and Speed's address in your address book please check to see if you are infected with the solbig worm.

Thanks.

AND NOW FOR TODAY'S TIP... When good computers go bad

I'm dispensing with the Q&A format today to talk about the MyDoom
virus. This malicious program poses a threat to all of us and to the
Internet. This is important, so stay with me.

Last weekend, the SCO Group's Web site was attacked by thousands of
infected machines. These are mostly private machines, owned by
individuals. They have been turned into zombies by the MyDoom virus.
MyDoom is a backdoor virus, so-called because it uses an obscure
Windows communications channel out of the zombie computers to reach
the Internet.

More attacks are expected. Microsoft also is expected to be attacked.
McAfee, the anti-virus company, estimates that 175,000 machines have
been turned into zombies. Other estimates range over 1 million.

The incident over the weekend is known as a Distributed Denial of
Service attack. These attacks bombard network servers--in this case,
servers at SCO Group--with requests for service. The overwhelming
traffic slows the Web site to a crawl, or causes it to crash.

Programs like MyDoom can do much more than attack Web sites. They can
be used to find credit card and Social Security numbers, passwords, and
other sensitive information on the zombie computers. They can then send
that information back to the people who wrote the virus.

Backdoor programs like MyDoom also are used as spam engines. They can
send millions of spam e-mails from infected machines. In most cases,
the owners never know. You could be spewing pornography to the world
without your knowledge.

This is very serious business. You must protect yourself. There's
really no reason to be snagged by this--or any other--virus. If you
take three simple steps, you'll be safe.

First, install anti-virus software. Then--and this is critical--go to
the manufacturer's Web site and download the latest update. It will
include code that can uncover the most recent viruses. Your anti-virus
software will be useless if it is out of date. Scan your computer with
the anti-virus program. If you are infected with MyDoom, the anti-virus
program will find it.

There are a number of anti-virus software companies. Four are: McAfee,
Symantec, Panda and Grisoft. The latter makes the free AVG program. The
others charge for their programs. Because you're paying the first
three, you'll probably get better service if you have a problem. Their
Web sites are:
    http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp
    http://www.symantec.com
    http://www.pandasoftware.com
    http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Free tools are available if you can't get MyDoom off your computer.
Find them at:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ (McAfee AVERT Stinger removal tool)
   http://snipurl.com/mydoomresponse (Symantec removal tool)
   http://snipurl.com/48de (Panda Software removal tool)

The second step: Install a firewall. These programs hide your computer
from hackers on the Internet. Good ones also refuse to let backdoor
viruses communicate with the Internet. My favorite firewall is
ZoneAlarm, which is free. Get it through my site at:
    http://www.komando.com/bestshareware.asp

Do not depend on the firewall built into Windows XP. It will not block
transmissions from backdoor programs.

If you have a network and a router, you may have a built-in firewall.
Check your router's documentation. Be sure the firewall has been
enabled and updated, if necessary.

Your last step should be updating Windows. Microsoft issues security
updates when vulnerabilities are discovered. Automatic updates are easy
in Windows XP, ME and 2000. Get the details at:
    http://www.komando.com/tips_show.asp?showID=6086

Manual updates are also easy. The link to my site above explains
that, too. The manual update works with all versions of Windows,
including 98.

This is an unsafe world, and protecting yourself is your
responsibility. Don't let the bad guys take control of your computer.
Follow these steps, keep everything updated, and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps. I'll see you tomorrow with another great tip!
Kim :)

mugs, my books, screen cleaners & more! We'll wrap using special

Anytime, 210.  ;-)

At least I'm only bumping - most people I kick!

Actually, I bumped this thread because I've recently had to wipe my PC clean due to spyware, and I got a number of recommendations for Ad-Aware as a great free program to use.

new round of viurses and spyware out there.

The new virus attaches a pic and the message is one like a lonely singles ad.  It even attaches a picture to the email.

I use both Ad-Aware and SpyBot...both catch things the other doesn't.

Best thing is both are free and simply to use--can't ask for more than that.
